On our walk yesterday we found caterpillars eating the nettles in front of our building. The caterpillars are black with spines and orange-ish feet. Of course, we had to bring one home to observe. I don't know if Jaan understands that they'll turn into butterflies, but he is very excited about them anyway.

Thank you for including the photo of yourself as well; we have been longing to see you.

What a joy to be able to introduce Jaan to the amazement of metamorphosis at such an early age! We will be eager to hear about the changes as they occur.

It sounds like you have the caterpillar of a Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta). The Red Admiral is known in Russia, and the caterpillars eat nettle and have orange feet. You can't imagine how much it warms my heart to know that you and Jaan are encountering butterflies that we have in our own backyard. In fact, I have been raising Red Admiral caterpillars and releasing them in our yard for the past few weeks.

I also am raising Giant Swallowtails, Black Swallowtails, Great Southern Whites, Zebra Longwings, Monarchs and Gulf Fritillaries. Wish ya'll were here to enjoy them.
